High Temperature tape refers to the adhesive tapes that are applied to high temperature working environment. With the main feature of peeling off without residue, high temperature tapes are mainly used as masking and protecting function during Powder coating, Plating, circuit board printing, wave soldering masking and SMT mounting. It can be applied to a wide range of industry application, like Electronic industry, Automotive industry, Aerospace industry, etc.
Here we’d like to classify the high temp tapes as below:
First, high temperature can be divided according to different carrier films.
Polyimide Tape, also named as Kapton or Golden Finger, which is the most cost effective heat resistance material on the market with the short using high temperature resistance to be 350℃. The General thickness of Kapton films are 12.5um, 25um, 35um, 50um, 75um, 100um and 125um, and our factory can also customize other special thickness like 150um, 200um or 225um as per client’s requests. Amber and Black color are the two most common color, and black color can be also made as glossy or matte finish. Other colors like Green, Red or Transparent can be also customized with certain MOQ and higher cost.
Polyester also abbreviated as PET (The chemical name is polyethylene terephthalate, also named as MYLAR tape). Its melting temperature is 240℃, and the highest working temperature is 230℃, while the best working temperature is within 180℃. PET Film features with high transmittance and cheap cost, which is not only used as high temperature resistance tape but also as Mylar insulation tape or PET protective film. Most of the PET films are transparent color, besides of some other color like Amber color, Red, Blue and Green color.
- 3. Glass Cloth Carrier
Glass cloth is made of glass fiber and woven as cloth, and the general thickness is 130um in white color. Glass cloth has very strong tensile strength and tear resistance which can be used as wrapping or fixing for transformer, Motor, lithium battery or even mine equipment maintenance.
Glass fiber cloth is made of Teflon treated and coated with silicone adhesive after nanochemical treatment. It has anti-stick, high temperature and chemical resistance features, which provides more durable solution on packaging and heat sealing machines. The general thickness of Teflon glass fabric is 80um and 130um, other special thickness like 50um, 150um or 250um can be also customized as per clients request.
PTFE Film is consist of suspension PTFE resin by moulding, sintering, cooling into blank. It has excellent dielectric properties, ageing-resistance and corrosion resistance features which is often used on thread sealing, Pipe doping, plumbers and wrapping. There are three colors for options, which are white, brown and black.
Second, high temperature tapes can be divided into different types as below according various adhesives.
- 1. Silicone adhesive
Silicone glue is the best heat resistance pressure sensitive adhesive. It can resist long temperature to 260℃ and short temperature to 300℃. There are two main systems for silicone glue which is BPO catalytic system and platinum catalytic system. BPO system is cheap and has better heat resistance, but it will volatilize small molecules ofsilicon dioxide, which will affect the cleanliness of the product. The platinum catalyst system has poor temperature resistance, but better cleanliness, which is usually used to make silicone protective film products.
- 2. Acrylic adhesive
Acrylic glue has a wide range of viscosity good cleanliness but poor heat resistance. The viscosity can range from 1 gram of protective film to 3000gram of VHB series tape. Generally, the higher the viscosity, the worse the temperature resistance. The glass transition temperature of acrylic adhesive is about 200 degrees, the shape of acrylic adhesive over 200 degrees has changed, and the viscosity is very low. After coating finished, it needs to be cured and matured at 40°C for 48 hours. The cured and matured time is different in summer and winter, 3-4 days in summer and about 1 week in winter.
Low temperature resistance is the defect of acrylic adhesive type. However, the glue factory has done a lot of research to modify the glue. At present, it has developed temperature resistance of 250 degrees and a viscosity of 7-8N acrylic adhesive high temperature tape.
Third, according to different layer structure, high temperature can be divided as below
- 1. Single side high temperature tape
Single side tape consists of carrier like Polyimide film, Polyester film, Glass cloth, Teflon glass fabric or PTEFE film and coated with one layer adhesive like silicone adhesive or acrylic adhesive.
- 2. Single side tape with release film
Single side tape with release film use film as carrier coated with silicone or acrylic adhesive and combine with a release film to protect the adhesive side
- 3. Double side tape with one layer release film
Double side tape with one layer release film use film as carrier double side coated with silicone or acrylic adhesive and combined with a release film
- 4. Sandwich double side tape with double layer release film
Double side tape with double layer release film uses film as carrier double coated adhesive and combined with two layer release film, one layer to face side adhesive, the other layer to back side adhesive, it’s mainly used on die-cutting processing.
